Speak life 🔥

 We all know that words can have such a big impact- on others and on ourselves. One word can send someone spiralling- out of control, out of reach. This generation isn't exactly known for speaking life. We are known for "roasting" for being unfiltered and talking trash about ourselves and others. Gossip is normal. Bullying feels like a second nature. I’m not here to judge or condemn- but this is the truth of our generation.

So that is why, today I am writing about the idea of speaking life. Recently, when leading a Jnr youth group, we spoke about the power of words and speaking life into others. The next day, I came across Mathew 15 and Proverbs 15 in my daily bible reading plan. That is no coincidence. 

Lately, I’ve been struggling to speak life into myself and others. I’ve also been hearing what other people have been saying about me and my friends, and it’s hard- really hard- to rise above what other people’s words and remember what God says about us. That we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

One of the most beautiful things about being in a relationship with Jesus is that His words don’t shift with the culture, the comments, the crowd. Throughout the bible he constantly encourages, shines love and draws near too the lost sheep of Israel.

And most of all? We are encouraged to spend a life pursuing Jesus. To be more like him. One of His greatest commandments is to love your neighbour as he loved you.

Everyone is our neighbour. You know that “Pick-me girl” you can’t stand? She deserves love and a judgemental free zone. Your enemies? Jesus actually explicitly says to love them. That random stranger across the road? They deserve love too.

In Mathew 15: 11 it says:

"What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them."

The most dangerous part of the body is the tongue. Remember, you have the power to speak pure life-giving words to others and too yourself.

Reading the bible, doing service, surrounding yourself with good and righteous people, praying for everyone (yes even your bullies) all of this will help you find your identity in Christ. Once you love yourself as someone made in His image, and love others as your sisters and brothers in Christ, everything begins to shift.

So, this week I encourage you to think about the words you are speaking. Choose purity. Choose encouragement. Choose life. And remember: Jesus loves you- and we are called to love others. To be different than the people of this generation. To be set apart.
